Teaching Sport in Malawi

Join this programme to help coach sports next to Lake Malawi. Your main role will be to offer support to under-staffed schools teaching sports and help to provide a better learning environment for the children. Through sports coaching, you will also help to address an area that is so often overlooked in African schools - physical and sports education. Coaching sports will help to develop better health and wellbeing amongst local children, in a fun and productive way! You will also have the opportunity to get involved with community projects.



Location:

Monkey Bay on the shores of Lake Malawi.

Accommodation:

Shared volunteer house on the outskirts of Monkey Bay.

Meals:

Three meals are provided each day.

Dates:

2010: Every other Monday from January 4th.

Voluntary Work

Your main role on this voluntary project is to aid the local school teachers and initiate sports activities with the local children and sports teams. Volunteers are encouraged to be flexible and motivated and will at times need to use their own initiative. However, so much can be achieved this way and your volunteer experience can be more rewarding as a result.

Volunteer activities include:

  • Assisting coaches with local sports teams to develop your coaching experience
  • Support teachers in subjects such as English and maths during class
  • Get involved with a local orphanage, help out at a tree nursery or assist with building projects
  • Organise tournaments and matches for school children after school

What’s Included in the Programme

  • Project Fee: this entails financing that goes directly back into the project you are involved with. This project fee facilitates funding for items such as building materials, equipment, supplies, foodstuffs, etc.
  • Airport transfers to and from Lilongwe International Airport
  • Orientation on arrival
  • All accommodation during your stay at shared volunteer house
  • Full support and assistance from your coordinator throughout your time in Malawi
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner each day.
  • 24-hour support number and contact for emergencies.

What’s Not Included in the Programme

  • All flights
  • Comprehensive travel insurance
  • Private Airport Transfers if arriving outside of the specified dates, at the cost of US$175 in cash, per person, per transfer
  • Any extra nights of accommodation at the volunteer house: this costs US$25 per night
  • All items of a personal nature, such as curios, gifts, clothing (work and other)
  • E-mail/Internet and telephone calls
  • Public transport to and from the community hospital when necessary
  • Soft drinks, beer, wines and spirits
  • Any excursions over and above your planned itinerary in Malawi
