Malawi Sports and Community

Trip code: MASP
Teaching Sport in Malawi

Join this programme to help coach sports next to Lake Malawi. Your main role will be to offer support to under-staffed schools teaching sports and help to provide a better learning environment for the children. Through sports coaching, you will also help to address an area that is so often overlooked in African schools - physical and sports education. Coaching sports will help to develop better health and wellbeing amongst local children, in a fun and productive way! You will also have the opportunity to get involved with community projects.

Your Typical Itinerary

Please note that your itinerary may differ from this, depending on your own experience and the number of other volunteers on the placement at the same time, so that we ask that you approach the programme with a flexible attitude. Please use this itinerary as an example only. Here is how a typical day in the life of a Malawi Sports and Community Volunteer might take shape:

07:00 Breakfast
08:00 You either teach academic lessons in the local schools, help out with other community projects or have free time to yourself, if you wish.
12:00 Lunch
13:00 Schools Finish
14:00 Sports Classes and after school sports clubs
18:00 Dinner
19:00 Free time for travel or extra coaching with local football teams and interacting with the children

School Holidays
In Malawi there are three school terms each year, the dates of which vary each year and are often not confirmed until the last minute. As a general guideline the terms are as follows:

First term: From mid-January to mid-April.
Second term: From early May to the end of July.
Third term: From late August to mid-November

During the school vacations there is still a need for volunteers, as you may help out with organise holiday classes and activities for the children with the objective of keeping them off the streets and out of trouble. During this time you can get involved with many other activities such as working at an orphanage educating the children, assisting with building projects or extra curricular activities in the library at the school can be held for summer classes. In addition you may coach sports to the local teams, teach art and music as well as spending your time interacting with the children. There is much less structure to these activities therefore you should be prepared to work hard to think up ways to entice the children to come into school and you should expect to be creative and motivated to implement your own ideas with the children each day.

Please note: Itineraries and activities are subject to change.
