Location:

On the shores of Lake Malawi, close to Monkey Bay.

Accommodation:

Shared volunteer house right on the beach of Lake Malawi.

Meals:

Three meals a day are provided.

Dates:

The first and third Monday of each month.

Voluntary Work

Schools in Malawi are seriously under funded with little resources and a lack of the introduction of free primary school education has resulted in a huge increase in the number of children attending resulting in cramped conditions and poor quality of teaching. Schools in Malawi are seriously under funded with little resources and a lack of trained teachers to educate classes of up to 200 children. Volunteer help is desperately needed.

Volunteers are encouraged to be flexible and motivated and will at times need to use their own initiative. However, so much can be achieved this way and your volunteer experience can be more rewarding as a result.

Volunteer activities include:

  • Developing local sports facilities i.e. football goals, netball hoops etc
  • Coaching sports in schools and at after school clubs (you can even start your own club!)
  • Support teachers in subjects such as English and maths during class
  • Organise tournaments and matches for local children

What’s Included in the Programme

  • Project Fee: this entails financing that goes directly back into the project that you are involved with. This project fee facilitates funding for items such as building materials, equipment, supplies, foodstuffs, etc
  • Airport transfer to and from Lilongwe International Airport
  • Orientation on arrival
  • All accommodation during your stay at shared volunteer house
  • Full support and assistance from your co-ordinator throughout your time in Malawi
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner each day
  • 24-hour support number and contact for emergencies.

What’s Not Included in the Programme

  • Personal travel insurance for the duration of your placement, which should include cover for repatriation
  • All flights
  • Any transfer fees, if arriving/departing outside of the set dates: US$175
  • All items of a personal nature, such as curios, gifts, clothing (work and other)
  • E-mail/Internet and telephone calls
  • Soft drinks, beer, wines and spirits
  • Visas
  • Any excursions over and above your planned itinerary in Malawi
