Malaysia Orang-utan Experience
A unique programme giving you the opportunity to work closely with orang-utans, considered to be our closest relative and the only great ape outside of Africa. Take part in voluntary work in Malaysia to help protect this highly endangered species from extinction.
Voluntary Work
At the zoo – Volunteers assist the zoo keeper in feeding, cleaning & maintaining animal areas.
Tribal community work consists of:
- Assisting with eco-tourism – working with tribes in creating and repairing jungle trails, installing signage and developing orang-utan trails.
- Working with tribal community – teaching local school children and helping in daily activities in and around the longhouse.
- Conducting orang-utan research – carry out nest counts, record results of research and the collection and recording of insects.
Please note: there is no physical interaction with Orang-utans.
Location
There is a choice of zoo:
Negara Zoo – Situated 20 minutes from Kuala Lumpur. Taiping Zoo – Situated within the Lake Gardens of Taiping Town, approximately 3 hours drive north of Kuala Lumpur.
Tribal Community Work - The Iban tribe is located in Batang Ai, located on the Malaysian/ Indonesian border of Sarawak.
Accommodation and Meals
The two zoos have different types of accommodation: Taiping Zoo is a shared standard room in hotel accommodation with en-suite bathroom within walking distance to the zoo. Negara Zoo, you will be staying in a shared house within the grounds of the zoo. Accommodation in the jungle is traditional longhouse living in a large wooden lodge. Rooms consist of a mattress, clean bedding and a mosquito net on rattan raised mattresses.
Food is all rice-based with fresh jungle produce and contains chilli!
