Voluntary Work
Your volunteer work activities will include taking care of the animals as zoo keeper and clinic assistance. Working with the zoo team you will gain insight into the zoo animal behaviour and take part in the “behind the scenes” action of maintaining the zoo. Volunteers will rotate animals every 2-4 days.
As well as general cleaning and maintenance of their areas, you will learn about each individual animal, discover their eating habits and be responsible for keeping them well fed. You will also learn about their behaviour and if you feel confident enough have the opportunity to work as a Zoo guide to school children and tourists.
There are also possibilities to assist the onsite vet who may need your help in catching animals should they require treatment.
You will work with a variety of animals, changing every 2-4 days although you can request to spend your whole time working with one particular animal. The project aims to improve the quality of life of the animals and inspire visitors to appreciate the value of their native wildlife.
Both zoos boast a vast range of different animal and bird species. You could be working hands on with tigers, lions, elephants, orang-utans, hippos, seals, black rhinos, flamingos and more.
Other Activities
As part of your placement, you will also help to build new exhibits and to improve signage around the zoo. Towards the end of the programme you will be involved in a project planning for Zoo enrichment and visitor education. These are projects that aim to improve the quality of life of the animals and win a deeper appreciation from visitors on the Zoo and its furry guests.
