Monkey Rehabilitation South Africa
Your interaction with the monkeys will be very hands-on and you also have the chance to learn important aspects of conservation and ecology, as well as helping with monkey releases.
Voluntary WorkA brilliant aspect of this programme is that you will be able to combine valuable community work with local underprivileged communities.
Monkey Rehabilitation However the project isn’t just a rehab centre for monkeys, but for all other kinds of animals and birds too, such as antelope species, owls, baboons, caracal, snakes and crocodiles etc. Any orphaned/injured animals can get treatment at the centre.
When they are big enough or have recovered properly, they will be set free into their natural environments with volunteers helping will this, none of these animals are kept just for display.
You will have responsibility for feeding and caring for baby animals at the centre, which all need regular bathing and feeding. You will be required to make frequent checks on enclosures to make sure that the monkeys and other animals have enough water etc.
Community Projects The Rehabilitation Centre has for a long time been working with the nearby community, creating in partnership with local people, a number of community development initiatives.
- Teaching in either an urban or rural school
- The Rural Village Project
- The PRIESKA Project - This new project appreciates volunteers’ ideas and suggestions as they hope to establish an 80-student orphanage, nursery/crèche and school.
LocationPhalaborwa, close to Kruger National Park in South Africa.
Accommodation and mealsThere are two large dormitories at the Centre, one that sleeps eight and the other sleeping ten, with an extra hut sleeping four to six. Breakfast is at 9 a.m. and usually consists of cereals and toast etc. Groceries will be supplied for lunch, and volunteers normally make their own lunch. You will have dinner served at 7pm.
Accommodation at the Release Site - At the camp you will cook outside on fires under African skies, sleep in large ‘army-style’ tents, and have the chance to drink in the treetop bar during the evenings.
Accommodation at the Community Project - Accommodation is provided in chalets and tents in the Camping area with full washing facilities. Depending on the group’s size, you may also be accommodated at the centre’s chalets, or at particular projects or on the premises.
