Mozambique Community Development

Volunteer with children in Mozambique

The project gives volunteers the opportunity to work in areas such as HIV and AIDS education and awareness workshops, craft workshops, a chance to teach the children English, and even cookery! As part of the programme you can also help the village children develop their soccer skills.



Location:

The coastal town of Vilanculos, Mozambique.

£195 (balance due 12 wks before departure)

Accommodation:

Rustic, comfortable thatched bungalows, just 100m from the beach.

Meals:

Three meals a day.

Dates:

Starts the first Monday of every month.

Voluntary Work

Take part in either or both of the following two programmes.

The community project will involve:

  • Working on a range of programme opportunities in various project areas
  • Building the trust of the local community in order to facilitate local acceptance of health and education projects
  • Offering an alternative activity to youngsters who are not in school
  • Helping local children to develop skills and improve their self-esteem
  • Helping to improve/correct the public perception of disadvantaged people in rural African communities

The soccer project involves:

  • Develop the soccer skills of the children, and help them to increase their self-esteem
  • Offer an alternative activity to youngsters who are not in school
  • Develop a relationship of trust between project workers and the local community in order to facilitate work in the more sensitive areas such as HIV/AIDS education (occur once every 4-6 weeks)
  • Improve/correct the reputation of disadvantaged local people

What’s Included in the Programme

  • Project Fee: this entails financing that goes directly back into the project that you are involved with. This project fee facilitates funding for items such as teaching materials, sports equipment, supplies, etc, as well as the development of the actual programme
  • Orientation and introductions to project work upon your arrival
  • A cultural day involving an insight into the traditional lifestyles of the local area, including traditional food, dancing, drumming and singing
  • All daily transportation to and from the project
  • Full board and lodging which includes three meals a day at your volunteer accommodation
  • Assistance and full support in your projects by African staff and volunteer co-ordinators

What’s Not Included in the Programme

  • All flights
  • Personal travel insurance for the duration of your placement (expected to include cover for repatriation)
  • All items of a personal nature, such as curios, gifts, clothing (work and other)
  • E-mail/Internet and telephone calls
  • Soft drinks, wines and spirits
  • Visas for Mozambique, as well as departure tax $30 when you leave the airport
  • Any excursions over and above your planned itinerary in Mozambique
