Voluntary Work

The project aims to propose recommendations for the improvement of conservation by monitoring the whale shark numbers in the area as well as their behaviours and to possibly also monitor manta rays and loggerhead turtle activity, especially when nesting.

The project also looks into the condition of coral reefs. As a volunteer you will be involved in helping to conserve the marine biodiversity of the area through diving, beach walking, boat surveys and swims along the coastline around Tofo.

Here are a few of the main activities you will be involved in:

  • Dive Course - complete your internationally recognised PADI scuba certification
  • Reef Transect dives - record coral conditions, indicator species and benthic cover whilst diving along transects above the reef
  • Monitoring manta rays and loggerhead turtles
  • Beach walks
  • Boat Surveys - travelling out to sea by boat to locate and photograph whale sharks, estimate numbers and record their location
