Voluntary Work
During your first two weeks in Namibia, your time will be split between the Wildlife Sanctuary, located a little outside Windhoek and a large private medical practice in Windhoek where you will be assisting and receiving your training for your time at the rural clinic.
The Bushman Clinic
You will be able to head out to the Bushman Clinic when the onsite staff are happy that you are ready to go and have sufficient knowledge and training. Volunteers spend about 14 days at the very basic rural Bushman Clinic assisting the nurse and rotating between various stations to make sure that you have the broadest possible training in the following areas:
-
Consultations: sit in on some doctor and patient consultations
- Nursing: observational work on pregnant women and assisting in wound dressing. You will do this for at least 3 hours a day
- Eye Scouts: dealing with cataracts
- Observation: learning to carry out procedures such as glucose tests, ECG, urinal tests, pregnancy tests etc
- Pharmacy: learning about medications used at the clinic
In the afternoons you will head back to the Wildlife Sanctuary
Namibian Wildlife Sanctuary
You will also have the unique opportunity to get up close and have contact with some of Africa’s most beautiful wildlife. This well-known centre is a unique wildlife sanctuary, which protects and cares for many animals – mainly big cats. It is hoped that it will encourage the locals to get involved in conserving their natural heritage.
So far, the project has looked after: 5 lions, 2 leopards, 2 wild dogs, 3 cheetahs, 5 baby baboons, which are being hand raised, a pig named ‘Babe’ and a talking African Grey parrot, 2 mongooses, 3 meerkats, 7 baby tortoises, 7 dogs and 2 cats.
