Namibia Desert Elephant Conservation

Trip code: NAEH
Volunteer with Elephants

This volunteer project is about getting out into the field and really making a difference at the forefront of elephant conservation. It is ideally suited to career breaks, grown up gap years and short adventure holidays, with each part of the programme broken into 2 week periods.

Project Itinerary

Below is an example of how a typical day in the life of a Desert Elephant Volunteer might take shape. Please note that your itineraries may differ from this, depending on your own experience and the number of other volunteers on the placement at the same time. Please use this itinerary as an example only.

During the first week we cheat the heat and wake up early, for our first cup of coffee around the campfire. After the team member on duty has served breakfast, we head out to our project site for the day. It is likely that you will be busy building a wall around a local farmer’s windmill or mechanical pump or even constructing an alternative water point for the animals to drink from, all of which will be hard but extremely rewarding work. We then head back to our camp for lunch and a siesta. You could be asked to update data forms or be on kitchen and camp duty for the day.

The second week is spent out on elephant patrol. We pack some basic camping equipment in the 4x4, and set off looking for the illusive elephants. On patrol we camp wild, and sleep under the stars. We follow elephants on foot, sometimes for hours under the desert sun, and sit patiently observing from some rocky outcrop whilst they laze away in the shade - This really is the life that few ever have the privilege of living!
