Volunteers will be split between the public hospital of Katima Mulilo, private doctors and clinics practicing in the town and the small rural clinics that are close to the traditional African villages.

The role that you play depends on your medical experience. We would like to exaggerate that experience is not a prerequisite for this project. Those with very little or no medical training are more than capable of giving valuable support to the local doctors and nurses who will, for their part, offer you guidance and advice.

Those volunteers who are accomplished and qualified medically may be asked to get involved with diagnosing and treatment of illness and injuries, from the simple to the serious.

Voluntary Work

What your exact responsibilities will be will very much depend on your current medical qualifications and experience and also the requirements of the hospital/clinics in which you will be working. You will be involved with some of the following
  • Helping to care for newborns
  • Visiting rural villages in a mobile hospital
  • Tending to the patients waiting to see the doctor
  • Bandaging wounds
  • Carrying patients to their consultation
  • Providing a general service to the hospital and clinic patients
  • Offering any practical assistance to the doctors and nurses

Location

This project is based in the Caprivi Region of northern Namibia. You are in easy reach of both the Chobe National Park of Botswana and Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls from the region’s capital city Katima Mulilo.

Accommodation and Meals

Those participants who are working close to Katima Mulilo will be accommodated in a comfortable backpacker house. You will be sharing a room and a bathroom with up to 3 of your fellow volunteers. Your food is included, although you will need to prepare your own meals.

For those who are volunteering at the rural medical clinics, your accommodation will be in a tented safari camp at Bwabwata National Park, around 120km west of Katima Mulilo. The tents each sleep two and have beds. There are also clean bathroom facilities with flushing toilets and hot showers available. Your 3 meals a day are included and prepared for you.
