Namibia Wildlife Sanctuary Volunteers

Trip code: NAWR
Big cat conservation Namibia

Help to care for the welfare of animals that have been orphaned or injured. The centre aims to operate as a soft release area for animals that have been rehabilitated successfully from the Noah’s Ark project, 300 kilometres East of Windhoek.

Orientation

When you arrive at the project, the various staff members will show you around the site and inform you about the type of work that you will be doing. This is a great opportunity for you to raise any questions that you may have and find out more about this programme.

Accommodation and Meals

Accommodation will be provided in one of the two volunteer houses. You will be staying in clean, comfortable but basic accommodation, sharing with two other volunteers. Each room contains three single beds with linen, duvets and pillows provided. There will be communal showers and toilets available for you with hot running water. There is the option for a private room at an extra cost of NAD$649 (payable locally).

Meals
During your stay at the sanctuary, you will receive three basic but tasty meals a day. Breakfast is on a help-yourself basis, with toast and cereals etc. Lunch is typically sandwiches, salads or hot meals, whilst dinner includes a hot meal or barbecue. There is a communal kitchen and dining area that overlooks the vast plains of this fantastic project site and a small shop where you can buy a few snacks. We can make allowances for most dietary requirements including vegetarians, vegans and common food allergies. In these cases, please speak to the camp manager or cook if you have specific requirements. However, you must take responsibility for your own allergies and carefully monitor the food that you consume. It is important that you let us and your project manager know of any dietary requirements that you may have.

Free Time

During your project, you will have the evenings to relax from approximately 5.30pm, Saturday afternoons from around 4pm and all day on Sundays. However, you will still take care of the animals, feeding them and cleaning out their enclosures. Volunteers also take turn to look after the baby baboons in the evenings and overnight. There is also the opportunity for a small group of volunteers to head into Windhoek on Sundays to pick up some supplies and check your emails, though this cannot be guaranteed, so please bring your essentials with you to Africa!

Project Support

You will have the continual support of our coordinator and project staff. They will help you with any questions or advice you may need. Along with this you will have access to a 24-hour emergency number should you need to contact our UK staff at any time.

Programme Age Limit

The Minimum age on this project is 18 years; the maximum depends on the health of the potential participant.
