The Nevada Conservation Project is doing broad-ranging and important work in the Reno area. There will be plenty of time to enjoy this fantastic part of the world, as the schedule allows for periods of free time between project shifts, so you can get to see all the great sights.

Voluntary Work

  • Building and maintaining minimum impact trails and control erosion
  • You will learn the techniques of dry stone masonry, and use it to construct retaining walls, switchbacks, water bars, and riprap erosion control barriers.
  • Other responsibilities will include recreating tread surface to allow for proper trail run-off and also removing overgrown vegetation from the trails.
Other duties involve a variety of restoration practices, including:
  • Devalue illegal roads
  • Transplant native vegetation to the area
  • Plant restoration
  • Removal of non-native invasive plants and weeds
  • Transplanting of plant seedlings

Locations

Locations will change throughout the volunteer project. Project sites that you may visit include:
  • Spring Mountains National Recreation Area
  • Black Rock Desert
  • Ruby Mountain
  • Death Valley
  • South McCollough Wilderness Area
  • Lake Mead

Accommodation and Meals

Whilst working on projects, volunteer groups will be camping overnight in the field. These camps may be set up out in the Nevada wilderness, or in designated camping grounds. Whilst camp life can be pretty basic, it helps to make good friends of companions who can get to know each other around the campfire, watching the glorious starry night skies, and enjoying the peace and quiet of the outback.

Your tents will be supplied along with cooking equipment. Food and will be provided each day. Meals will be cooked in the camp’s shared dining area. Special dietary requirements can be accommodated.

Please note: To take part, you must be between 18 and 35 years old.
