I'm sorry I haven't been in touch sooner. The days just seem to fly by!
I am really enjoying myself here. I am with a great group of volunteers, there are 9 of us this month, and the staff at the camp are great.
The orientation week was excellent. The visit to the Taj Mahal was well up to expectations and the 3 days in Jaipur were very good. We all really enjoyed staying with our host families. It would have been even better if we could have spent more time with them and not just the evenings and mornings, but that would probably not be possible as we had so much else to fit in with all the talks and visits.
Here at camp it is bitterly cold except in the middle of the day when the sun can be pretty hot. None of us had brought enough warm clothes and had to buy some when we went to the local market.
The teaching is interesting. A lot of the time you feel you are banging your head against a brick wall. The children have only been taught things 'parrot fashion'. They can recite the alphabet beautifully but ask them a letter out of context and they look utterly confused. Still, hopefully we are helping them.
The food in camp is excellent - too good for the waistline!!
We visited the Tiger Reserve at Ranthambore our first weekend. It was lovely in spite of seeing no tigers. Then this weekend we went to the Holy city of Pushkar and on a camel safari and camping in the desert. We all really enjoyed that.
Hopefully this is a good enough précis of life here at Laslot. Let me know if you have any questions. I'm afraid I haven't managed to get any photos on the internet yet. We only have electricity for a few hours every evening and then everyone wants to get on the computer so time is limited.
