Plan a Career Break

There are all kinds of things you need to consider when you plan a career break. The major thing you firstly need to decide when you plan a career break is where you are going to travel and what you are going to do. When you plan a career break the number of choices and options available can seem a little daunting - so making these decisions isn't always as easy or straight forward as you might think. Our ‘Plan a career break' page aims to make this process a little bit easier by outlining all of the preliminary options you need to think about…

Plan a career break - Where to go?

When you plan a career break you will obviously need to decide where you are going to travel. It may be that you have some places in mind that you have always dreamed about travelling to and, if this is the case, deciding on where to go is a straight-forward and fun process. If you are a little more open minded about where to go, however, in order to make the right decisions when you plan a career break you will need to do a bit of research and read up on different areas. When you plan a career break it's important to bear in mind that places that might be fantastic for some people may not be right for you personally (if you like your westernised creature comforts, for example, then you are probably advised to avoid an ‘off the beaten track' over-landing expedition)!

Plan a career break An excellent source of information when you plan a career break is the GYFGU's website, and it's worth spending some time reading up on all the different countries and what each of the various programmes has to offer. All of Real Gap's travel advisers have taken a gap year themselves so it's also worth picking up the phone and speaking to one of them when you plan a career break.

If, when you plan a career break, you find that you want to visit numerous different countries, it's probably worth considering buying a round the world ticket. With a round the world ticket you literally circle the globe making use of ‘free' stopovers along the way and the cost of one often isn't much more than the price of a return flight to Australia.

Plan a career break - What to do?

When you plan a career break you also need to decide what to do in the places you visit.

It may be that you simply want to get stuck in to some travelling, which is absolutely fine (and indeed that's all many people do). When you plan a career break you may, however, also decide that you would like to combine your travel with some volunteer work at some point. If this is the case there are all kinds of volunteer programmes to choose from all over the world when you plan a career break - either caring for the environment, endangered wildlife or impoverished communities.

Another option to consider when you plan a career break, aside from volunteering, is to learn a new skill while you are away. For example you could learn a new language or learn how to scuba dive. If you are looking for paid work overseas options when you plan a career break unfortunately most countries only grant working holiday visas to people under the age of 30. One exciting exception to this general rule, however, is China - where it's possible to get a fully paid position working as an English teaching assistant.

Plan a career break - What to take?

Once you have finalised your travel plans all you then need to think about when you plan a career break is what to take! Before you go you will receive a comprehensive GYFGU's pre-departure pack, which contains loads of useful career break travel advice and tips on what to take and your travel adviser can also give you plenty of advice on how to plan a career break.
