Reptile Conservation Volunteer South Africa
If you have a keen interest in Reptiles and hands on conservation, then you should consider joining this voluntary project. Working directly with reptile experts, your days will be varied and full of adventure - ranging from on-site care of existing reptiles to rescue operations in towns and surrounding farms.
Voluntary WorkNot all of the volunteer work is particularly glamorous. The day starts with a general cleanup and maintenance of enclosures. The volunteers will also have to assist with medicating the animals and checking through faeces for parasites and abnormalities. Other activities include:
- The collection and recording of relevant data for animals being released.
- Reptile, amphibian and arachnid research in the bush.
- Habitat location for future releases
Volunteers will have to wear good walking shoes and be expected to climb trees and rocky outcrops. Finding new release sites involves swimming in streams, trekking through the bush and exploring caves - a mini-adventure every day. Each group will be adding a bit of valuable information towards the project.
The project is in the process of building new specialized enclosures that the volunteers will help construct and maintain which will involve some manual labour.
Volunteers can also:
- Attend a Ranger Course
- Learn safe snake handling methods
- Help with reptile demonstrations
LocationThis project is situated to the West of Kruger National Park; 20 minutes away from Hoedspruit in the Province of Limpopo.
Accommodation and mealsVolunteers stay in a, house keeper serviced, large commune on the premises with a newly renovated swimming pool. The commune has braai (BBQ) facilities and a large tropical garden. Sleeping arrangements are on bunk beds in rooms with en-suite facilities. Beds with a fitted sheet, pillow and pillowcase are provided. (Sleeping bags are recommended but we have full bedding available).
Groups more than four in size will have their evening meals prepared for them by the resident housekeeper. Other meals will have to be prepared by the volunteers themselves. There is however a good restaurant at the Reptile Park itself.
A few great pubs and restaurant are situated close by and the park will provide transport if paid for and pre arranged.
