On the southeastern coast of Kenya, hot, steamy and historical Mombasa is the country's second largest city and is the centre of coastal tourism.
With a population of 900,000, Mombasa is actually an island connected to the mainland by a bridge. The old town is intricate with streets that wiggle deceptively. It has been a Muslim haven for centuries. The old town was attacked by the Portuguese in 1505 and burnt to the ground. Kenyans quickly rebuilt the city only for it to be reduced to rubble again by an embattled Mombasan ruler during the long fight against the Portuguese. The Old Town is testament to this tumultuous era.
Downtown Mombasa is a different story. It has modern, wide streets but it does not contain the hustle and bustle of Nairobi. It has a relaxed atmosphere with no rush hours, or urgency.
