South Africa Conservation Education through Photography
Recently declared a World Heritage Site, South Africa’s most striking area, St. Lucia, is still in need of some assistance to make sure the area receives the conservation and protection it needs. Volunteers are needed to be involved in compiling a photographic database of the wildlife in the area to be used for education and conservation purposes.
The Volunteer ProgrammeGreater St. Lucia Wetland Park is set in around a half million acres and is known as a fantastic bush and beach (where SA meets the Indian Ocean) destination. The area deserves its label as ‘ecologically diverse’ as it is here that five eco-systems join: swamps, savannahs, dunes, fresh water wetlands and salt water marine systems making for an area with a huge wealth of wildlife.
You will spend the majority of your time out in the park taking photographs of the various wildlife that you come across. You can expect to see rhinos, elephants and perhaps even an elusive leopard! Though the photography database is the main focus of the project, you will also be involved with educational activities and raising awareness within the local community about how important the area is and the importance of the wildlife and the conservation of it.
Being an enthusiastic photographer is indispensable to this programme, however, whilst any experience and knowledge would be helpful, it is not a essential requirement. All photographic equipment is to be supplied by you but again, there are no requirements as to what type of camera and accessories you should bring.
