South Africa Field Guide Course - Eastern Cape

Trip code: SAFG
Work as a field guide

If you want a change of career or a very different kind of qualification why not consider this incredible programme working with Africa’s wildlife. You’ll never forget working under African skies with this experience of a lifetime.

Accommodation and Meals

Once you have passed your exams and begin your work placement, your accommodation will vary, as lodges change their needs and alliances frequently. However, there are three types of placement:

  • Placement at a lodge (usually 4 star lodges or higher)
  • Placement at an animal rehabilitation centre
  • Placement with an overland safari operator

All meals will be provided during the course. Breakfast is usually on a help-yourself basis, whilst lunch and dinner will be catered for you.

Free Time

You will be busy during the week on your course from Monday morning to Saturday afternoon. Your Saturday afternoons and Sundays are for free time.

We do not have scheduled trips to town, but there are several trips per week going to town where you can address personal needs. You will also have the opportunity to go out in the evenings after work activities. Many South African students have their own vehicles on campus, and you can share their rides.

Programme Age Limit

Minimum 18 years, maximum 40 years.

Programme Requirements

Participants will not need any particular qualifications to join this course, but a good level of GCSE English is required and a hard working attitude. You will also require a valid drivers license.

It is strongly recommended that you obtain a 'British D category' driver's license and contact the Automobile Association in the UK to have it converted so it will be valid in South Africa. This will minimise any complications with your license in South Africa (PDP - Public Driver's Permit).
