Programme Details
You will be under the guidance of the Merwe Genis Cricket School, which is the largest private cricket coaching school in the Western Cape. Your main purpose will be to give youngsters from a wide range of backgrounds, including underprivileged children, the chance to play this fantastic sport in a safe and structured environment.
Initially, your responsibility will be to organise and run training clinics for the kids. This will enable you to form strong relationships and perfect your coaching style. Moving forward, you will then plan and organise cricket tournaments, incorporating team-building exercises for the children.
Paid Work
This project is an excellent choice, as you benefit both underprivileged children who lack the opportunity to succeed, and yourself! It is also a great opportunity to earn a little extra cash too – you will receive payment of around 500 rand as pocket money each week!
You will be fully supported by your fellow volunteers and coaching staff. All coaching methods, ideas and tricks will be explained in full to you, ranging from technical bowling actions to beach cricket.
Weekend matches (8, 12 or 16 week option only)
Each Saturday you will represent one of the sides in the local premier competition or open grade, depending on your ability. It is important that you submit a ’cricket CV’ before you arrive, so the coach can allocate you to a side appropriate to your playing level and experience. For players with experience of playing at regional or county level, there will be opportunities to play at Boland Park, one of Cape Town’s iconic cricket locations.
Students on the 4-week option will have the opportunity to join the Cape Town Cricket Academy team and play against local schools & clubs mid-week and on the weekend. This is subject to there being enough players to form a team.
