Your hard work will form a vital contribution to this long-term project, plus you will have the chance to trail ride along the spectacular Wild Coast, against a backdrop of beach lagoons and lush green game reserves. And, at weekends, you’ll have the chance to explore this glorious part of the world.

Voluntary Work

This is a small project which nurtures and rehabilitates sick and abused horses, so that they can be ridden again. The horse rehabilitation programme has been running for ten years.

It is reliant on the tourism trade and the efforts of its volunteer helpers to maintain the horses and run the centre. The centre works with horses that have been removed from conditions of cruelty and inadequate care. Volunteer work may include:
  • Feeding the horses
  • Mixing the feed
  • Grooming, lungeing, exercising, and schooling work
  • Checking the horses for health or behavioural problems
  • Trail-riding along the beach
  • Visiting the beautiful Kei Cuttings, and meeting some of the emerging farmers
  • Cleaning and filling water troughs

Location

On South Africa’s east coast, in a place called East London.

Accommodation and Meals

At the accommodation site in Chintsa East there are two great volunteer lodgings within a couple of minutes of the beach and with access to a private lagoon. Volunteers share cottages overlooking either the lagoon, or the river in the village. Accommodation is based on two or three people sharing a room. You can share the use of the project’s various beach accessories, including canoes and boogie boards, during your time at the project. Meals are included.
