Orientation
Upon your arrival in St. Lucia you will have a comprehensive orientation. This is carried out by your project coordinator and will include:
-
An introduction to St. Lucia and the area
- An introduction to all of the projects that you could be working on - how your photos will be used and what conservation projects you will be involved with
- A detailed ‘welcome pack’ will be available at the volunteer house throughout your stay, which will contain further useful information for your time on the programme.
Accommodation and Meals
During your project, you will stay at our large and comfortable project house situated in the middle of the town of St. Lucia. It is a fully furnished house with a large lounge, satellite television, barbeque area, garden, and a swimming pool. The volunteer house is approximately a 10 minute walk to the town and a 15 minute walk to the beautiful St Lucia beach and river estuary.
The house is staffed with a full time cook and laundry / cleaning ladies. All bedding and is provided, so you will not need to bring a sleeping bag with you, although sometimes it is useful in the colder months (June – September) or if you are planning going on excursions. You will however need to bring your own towels please. You will be sharing a bedroom with between one and four people.
Meals
You will be provided with three meals a day except Saturday dinner and Sunday lunch. Our cook has Saturday evening and Sunday lunchtime off so we invite volunteers to try the local restaurants for dinner and there is a small supermarket and cafe available for lunch. Dinner costs around GB£ 5 - 7 so is very reasonably priced. Please allow for this in your budget.
Breakfast is on a help-yourself basis, or packed if you start your project early. Lunch is either sandwiches or a light cooked meal. Dinner in the evenings is our main meal. This usually consists of casseroles, pasta dishes, and, occasionally, some local dishes, etc. We do cater for vegetarians.
Programme Support
Throughout your stay on the project you will have the support and guidance of our coordinator and team. You will be provided with competent assistance and help with any questions or advice you may need during your stay. You will also have the support of our Nature Guide Theo when out in the bush.
In addition you will have access to a 24 hour emergency contact number so you can contact one of our UK staff at any time should you need to.
Project Age Limit
Minimum 17 years, maximum decided on potential participants’ health.
Programme Requirements
To take part in this project, an enthusiasm for photography is essential. If you already have photographic knowledge and experience this will be helpful, but it is not essential. You will need to take your own photographic equipment - this means you will need to bring a SLR camera with you. If you have other photographic equipment such as additional lenses and tripods these will come in useful. Laptops for photo editing are also very helpful to bring with you although there are 2 computers at the house on which editing can be done (which you may need to share with other volunteers).
