South Africa Wildlife Photography and Conservation

Trip code: SANS
Nature and wildlife photography

Recently declared a World Heritage Site, South Africa’s most striking area, St. Lucia, is still in need of some assistance to make sure the area receives the conservation and protection it needs. Volunteers are needed to be involved in compiling a photographic database of the wildlife in the area to be used for education and conservation purposes as well as participating in other conservation-based initiatives in the local area.

Reviews

Kaye Brazier, February 2009
This project is worth every penny! I had the time of my life. St Lucia is a safe beautiful place to be (a bit touristy) and the surrounding area is fantastic. The town has everything you could want, supermarket, restaurants, bars, clothes shops, banks and three internet cafes, so don't worry if you forget to take something!

The time you get with Emil, the pro photographer, is absolutely brilliant but exhausting. He is so enthusiastic that you can't help being the same. I learnt a lot from him and I hope my photography has improved.

There are several game parks you visit, usually two a week, regular bush walks, conservation at the Unduna pan and you help with the local schools conservation club. This is a group of children who set this club up as they want to learn and help in conservation. They are so appreciative of help from the volunteers and are very keen. You also help out sometimes with the creche where there are lots of little children who love going on trips, especially the beach and seeing the wild animals!

The project managers are so friendly and helpful plus you get good food. All the staff are lovely and it doesn't take long to fit in. You share a room but they are of a high standard with air con and some with en-suites. The house has a pool which is needed after a long hot bush walk or game drive.

If you are a keen photographer and want to improve your skills plus get some awsome shots then this project is for you. If you do decide to go then I would recommend taking your laptop for downloading your photos. There are PCs available but only three. Also take as much of your camera gear as you can because you will get the chance to use all of it and don't forget your tripod. This project is suitable for complete begginers as well as those with experience. There is always help available if needed. Michelle, the project manager is a very acomplished photographer and is always willing to give advice and help.

I wish it had been longer as I didn't want to leave. I saw so many wonderful things. Oh, when you go to the Pan look out for three perches. They are called Michelle, Kaye and Ollie after us who made them and managed to get them into the water! Hope the birds are using them now.

If you have been on this travel project, we'd love to hear from you!
