Voluntary Work
The home houses orphans who have been abandoned or left helpless and also vulnerable elderly people. Currently it accommodates around 35 girls aged between 5–18 years, 20 boys aged between 5–16 years, 5 female adults and 15 male adults.
Attending school is very important for children at the orphanage, as it is their ticket to a much brighter future. All children attend school up to the age of 16/18 and then they are helped to decide on their futures (especially Polonnaruwa). Depending on which option they choose, they are given assistance to go to University, have vocational training or find a job.
Volunteering on this project will give you the opportunity to get fully involved in the lives of the residents at the orphanages.
You’ll be assisting in the day to day tasks of running the orphanage, chatting to the elderly residents and most importantly, using your time with the children to help them improve their Maths and English. These particular subjects are key to achieving a good education and therefore opening up their future options. Drama, games, sports, reading and creative lessons are also something that you can get involved in.
Volunteers can make a substantial contribution to all departments by looking after the children as well as the elders. Helping the children improve their English and maths skills creates more options for them and makes a positive impact on their lives.
