Voluntary Work

Volunteers on this project will be involved with a range of activities in the local schools with pupils between the ages of 6 and 14. The education of the young Swazis is based on the English National Curriculum – you will be able to give these vulnerable children a more positive future by providing them with a decent basic education as well as offering them support in a number of other ways.

Teaching the kids English and other subjects will increase their prospects of getting themselves a good job in the future. No previous experience necessary for this project but for you to really get something out of it you will need to be motivated and willing to dedicate time to both the children and the community needs.

It is most likely that you will be placed in a primary school as they are in the greatest need. You will be able to take part in the following sorts of activities whilst on the project:

  • Teaching – mainly English, Sciences, Geography and Maths
  • Sports – developing sports they already play, introducing something new
  • Set and mark homework, tests and exams
  • Extra curricular classes – music, drama, health workshops and anything else that you would like to organise
  • Vegetable Garden – helping out in agriculture classes and spending a bit of time ‘cultivating’ the vegetable garden with the children’s help
  • Home- based care – donating supplies, especially food to local impoverished families and households of which children are the head, also giving extra assistance with education/homework
  • You should also try and get involved with the day-to-day life at school as much as and wherever possible. The more effort you put in, the more rewards you get out
