Tanzania Care for Orphans and Street Children

Trip code: TAHO
Work with orphans in Tanzania

As a result of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, many children in Tanzania have been orphaned, and without the support of family, end up living on the streets. This project gives you the opportunity to help the local community by offering to care and support these orphans and children, and provide them with access to an education.

Project Orientation

On your first full day in Mwanza you will be given a comprehensive orientation by Mutani the project manager, or one of the project co-ordinators.

The orientation will include:

  • An introduction to Tanzanian culture and values, local food and practises
  • Basic local language lessons
  • Your health and safety whilst in Tanzania
  • Money and transportation in Tanzania
  • Workplace ethics and an introduction to your local project area, schools and staff
  • Areas worth visiting in your free time and an excursion to the City

Accommodation and Meals

You will stay in a comfortable yet basic shared volunteer house, around a 20 minute mini-bus taxi (dala-dala) ride from the Street Children Centre and Day Care Centre. The house is fenced and your project manager and cook will be staying at the volunteer house for your security.

The house can accommodate up to 20 volunteers at one time. The rooms are dormitory style, ranging from 4 to 6 volunteers per room in bunk beds. There are also shared washing facilities including 2 (cold!) showers and a western style toilet and a long drop toilet. The house has a kitchen and a living room with a DVD player. You will be provided with breakfast and dinner each day and you can buy your own lunch near the centre during the day for very little. Breakfast is usually on a self-service basis, consisting of tea, coffee and toast. The cook will prepare the evening meal for you which will usually consist of rice, beans, vegetables and sometimes meat/fish, or you may be invited to eat with the boys at the centre.

Weekend travel

There are a number of highlights that you may like to see in your free time at weekends, such as National Parks, or the Museums. The project staff will be happy to help you organise excursions while you are there, so please discuss the options with them.

Alternatively, you may wish to just relax by Lake Victoria. There are a number of small lodges offering water sports and other activities on the lake.

Programme Support

Throughout your stay in Tanzania you will have the support and guidance of our native Tanzanian project manager, Mr. Mutani Yangwe, and the team. They will provide you with competent assistance and help you with any questions or advice you may need during your stay.

In addition, we will provide you with a 24 hour emergency contact number before you depart, so that you can contact one of our UK staff at any time should you need to.

Programme Requirements

A Yellow Fever vaccination and certificate are required to enter Tanzania.
