With more land in reserves and National Parks than any other country, Tanzania is a top class safari destination. Diverse habitats range from equatorial to arctic, and include mountains, riverine forests, vast plains, coral gardens and tropical beaches.
For some of the best wildlife spotting in the world, the country's legendary parks include the Serengeti, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which sees enormous numbers of animals migrating through its borders and has a well deserved reputation for awesome big game safaris. Another World Heritage Site is the Ngorongoro Crater, a natural amphitheatre containing an extremely high volume of animals and offering unsurpassed opportunities for wildlife viewing. Other parks include Tarangire, Selous, Ruaha, and Arusha, all of which offer fantastic safaris, most with the Big 5, as well as large numbers of birds and a variety of habitats.
Tanzania has the highest mountain in Africa, the awesome Mt. Kilimanjaro, a challenging climb; for the less intrepid visitor, Mt. Meru in the Arusha National Park offers a terrific alternative! The main cities are Dar Es Salaam and Mwanza. The capital city is in the process of relocation from Dar Es Salaam to Dodoma, a more centrally located, and better connected town to the west of the old capital.
A world class diving destination, Tanzania has coral parks as well as marine reserves, and the planet's most beautiful coral reefs are found off its coasts. Gorgeous tropical beaches line the coast, and some of the best are found on nearby islands, from the paradise location of the Mafia Island marine reserve to the relaxed atmosphere of Pemba and Zanzibar, all have distinctive characters, and offer much more than just a beach resort. Zanzibar's colourful history and tranquil pace are complimented by white beaches and coral lagoons - a real desert island paradise.
