The programme will begin with a four week introductory and training period, training will focus on the best way to manage a class, the types of things that you will be teaching and how you should conduct yourself in the classroom.

Part 1: Introduction - Get to know the training staff and the other participants, and an introduction to the local area and helped to gain an understanding of the customs and culture of China. You will also receive ‘survival’ language lessons, to help you get by throughout your time in the country.

Part 2: Chinese Culture - This part is an in depth introduction of the Chinese school systems, how to plan lessons and the student psychology. Part two also includes an excursion, which could be a trip into the countryside, to the mountains, to a tea plantation or some other seasonal adventure!

Part 3: Learning how to teach - In this section you will obviously learn more about teaching the students. This will involve observing lessons that are lead by both Chinese and foreign teachers.

Part 4: The teaching practice - Exactly what it says on the tin – you are able to try out your newly learned skills by having a go at teaching your peers in practice sessions and also helping the teachers in local schools. This will hopefully allow you to begin your placement with much more confidence.

Teaching Programme

The schools that we work with are in Zhuhai City. You will find that the majority of China’s schools are large, about 50 students per class. There are a mixture of government and private schools.

Location

You are to be based in the south of Guangdong province in Zhuhai City, close to Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

Accommodation and Meals

Throughout your 4 weeks training, your accommodation will be in a hostel, in twin share accommodation. The University canteen will provide all of your food.

Once the training is over, participants are expected to pay their own living expenses. The project staff and your placement school will assist you in finding some accommodation.
