Zambia's Tuberculosis problem is mainly caused by poor medical support, where patients may be given the wrong drugs, or the wrong diagnostic tests. AIDS has affected tuberculosis numbers- from 1964-1984 the rate of disease was constant (1 in 1000), however, by 1996 the rate was 1 in 200, and the numbers are increasing rapidly. At least 68% of T.B. sufferers are HIV positive (in the general population this is approx. 14%), and many people are too embarrassed and ashamed to seek treatment, spreading the disease to others through their faltering.
Drug resistant strains and HIV have seriously challenged the fight against tuberculosis, and the high population growth, overcrowding, poor housing and poverty of Zambia cause higher instances of transmission. The disease spreads through coughing and the proximity of sufferers to healthy individuals, the increase in T.B. has also been linked to patients not following medical treatments.
According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, one third of the world's population is infected, and 5000 people die every day from the disease.
