The Nevada Conservation Project is doing broad-ranging and important work in the Reno area. There will be plenty of time to enjoy this fantastic part of the world, as the schedule allows for periods of free time between project shifts, so you can get to see all the great sights.

Voluntary Work

As a volunteer on this project you will be working to construct and maintain walking trails. You should be prepared for long hours and challenging work as well as up to 3 miles of hiking per day over demanding landscapes. You will be using a variety of techniques to construct trails, each of which are used to minimise the impact of the trails and to keep erosion under control.

You may get to learn some new skills, such as dry stone masonry so you are able to construct retaining walls, water bars, switchbacks and riprap erosion control barriers. You will also have other responsibilities; making sure there is proper trail run-off by recreating tread surface as well as removing vegetation that is encroaching the trails.

Volunteer activities include:

  • Building and maintaining minimum impact trails and control erosion
  • You will learn the techniques of dry stone masonry, and use it to construct retaining walls, switchbacks, water bars, and riprap erosion control barriers
  • Other responsibilities will include recreating tread surface to allow for proper trail run-off and also removing overgrown vegetation from the trails
Other duties involve a variety of restoration practices, including:
  • Devalue illegal roads
  • Transplant native vegetation to the area
  • Plant restoration
  • Removal of non-native invasive plants and weeds
  • Transplanting of plant seedlings
