USA Gibbon Conservation

Trip code: USGC
Volunteer with gibbons in America

A unique opportunity to work closely with with one of the largest and rarest groups of gibbons in the world. It is an outstanding experience for those wishing to purse a career in wildlife conservation.

Orientation

Volunteers will get intensive, hands on, one-on-one training by an experienced volunteer for the first several days after you arrive. You will follow the trainer on feeding rounds to learn how things are done at the volunteer centre. You will also be given a full information pack about procedures used at the centre.

Gradually you will begin caring for the gibbons independently. You will eventually be responsible for feeding, water changing, cleaning enclosures, etc.

Accommodation and Meals

The project accommodation is located onsite. You will have a trailer to yourself, or to share with one other volunteer. Kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities are located in the house on the property. You will be taken shopping each week for groceries to provide for three meals daily included in the programme.

Free Time

The sanctuary is in quite a remote location an hour outside LA and most evenings will be spent relaxing on site. You will have the opportunity to enjoy hiking, bicycling, bird watching and star gazing onsite. In the local area there is a variety of things to see and do. The project is located nine miles from Six Flags Amusement Park, which is always fun on your day off. You will also be located three miles from the local town, which can easily be reached by bus from the project.

Programme Support

Throughout your stay, you will have the support and guidance of the programme staff. They will provide you with competent assistance and help you with any questions or advice you may need during your stay. In addition, you will receive a contact for onsite staff when you arrive and we will provide you with a 24 hour emergency contact number before you depart, so that you can contact one of our UK staff at any time should you need to.

Project Age Limit

Minimum 18 years, maximum decided on potential participants’ health.

Programme Requirements

You will need to complete a series of medical tests before you go. This is for the protection of the gibbons. Please contact us if you would like details of these tests before applying. You do not need to do the tests before you book.

Please note that this project cannot accept volunteers who smoke.
