Trip code: USMS
USA Monkey Sanctuary

Amidst peaceful surroundings in central Florida, you will help feed, medicate, clean and monitor the monkeys as well as chipping in with maintenance of the sanctuary. The sanctuary homes over 80 capuchins, squirrel monkeys, spider monkeys, marmosets and tamarins. They are predominantly ex-pets or retired from medical research or entertainment and need rehabilitating and socialising with their own species. This is a physically demanding role but you will return home having learnt a great deal, made new friends and having had an extremely gratifying experience.

Information Pack:

The America Sanctuary Association accredits this Monkey sanctuary which is a safe, permanent home to rescued primates from around America. These animals have been abused, confiscated by authorities, retired from research laboratories, or abandoned by people used to own them as pets. It is currently home to 118 primates and unfortunately has a mounting waiting list for new residents.

The sanctuary condemns the practice of keeping exotic animals as ‘pets’ and hopes the stealing of infant monkeys from their natural mothers will end. It is common for baby monkeys to be extracted from their protective mothers, sometimes at just three days old, to be sold as ‘pets’. This forced separation is very traumatic for the mother and baby. It can take years for the mother to recover from the grief brought on by this experience and this cruelty always leaves scars on both baby and mother.

As these monkeys can no longer survive in the wild, the Sanctuary works toward creating a better life for them in their forced captivity. They also work successfully with other credible animal sanctuaries, primate associations and animal protection organizations.

Due to the high numbers of animals living at the centre, the demanding work load means that the Monkey Sanctuary is dependent on volunteers to help care for the orphaned, injured and rescued primates. During your time on the programme, some of the tasks you may be required to help with include:

  • Food preparation and feeding
  • Cleaning
  • Fundraising
  • Cage construction
  • Grounds maintenance
  • Husbandry
  • Enrichment

The primates are a challenging responsibility. They are no longer able to care for themselves due to their distressing backgrounds and require constant care. The monkeys are the top priority of all the staff and volunteers and you will quickly become part of a dedicated, hard working and friendly team.
