Orientation
When you arrive at the project you will have a day to settle in and you will be given an information schedule that will detail your first 10-14 days at the project. New volunteers will receive an orientation including:
- Basic animal care techniques
- Cleaning and feeding
- Diet and medicine preparation
- Enrichment
- Maintenance
- Safety procedures and regulations
- Tour Training
- Guard duty
Accommodation and Meals
Your accommodation is on-site at a ranch property and is basic ranging from a Hogan (a traditional Navajo Indian dwelling), trailer or cabin, to a dorm-style building. You also have the possibility to camp for some of (or all of) the length of your stay to truly embrace the desert lifestyle. Volunteers are given all meals whilst on the project.
Free Time
The sanctuary is located in a rural area and there is not a local bus service available. You will need to plan on spending quiet evenings at the sanctuary unless there is a group outing planned. You will have two days off each week. During these days off you can stay on-site or you can opt to do some independent travel. Volunteers generally organise activities together during their time in New Mexico.
You could possibly discuss trips to the local big cities or even some of the National Parks in the area. You will have plenty of time to relax and unwind.
Programme Support
Throughout your stay, you will have the support and guidance of the programme staff. They will provide you with competent assistance and help you with any questions or advice you may need during your stay. In addition, you will receive a contact for onsite staff when you arrive and we will provide you with a 24 hour emergency contact number before you depart, so that you can contact one of our UK staff at any time should you need to.
Project Age Limit
Minimum age for participants’ is 21 years, maximum depending on potential participants health.
