USA Wolf Sanctuary in New Mexico

Trip code: USWS
Wolf rescue in the USA

This project provides you the unique chance to work closely with these amazing creatures. The main aim of this wildlife sanctuary is to give care to neglected, abused or unwanted wolves and wolf dogs.

Your Typical Itinerary

Volunteers will work five days a week, for approximately eight and half hours each day with an hour for lunch. Each volunteer will have two assigned days off per week. In after hours, volunteers often group around a campfire or enjoy a group-prepared meal.

The workday begins at 8.00am and ends around 4.30pm. At 8.00am the person assigned morning rounds will deliver all of the morning med-balls. You will accompany this person each morning for the first ten days. From approximately 8.00am until 10.30am morning chores (cleaning and feeding the animals) are performed. During your first ten days, you will be following a staff member during this process.

At 10.30am the person assigned completes morning rounds. For the first ten days, you should follow this person each morning.

Volunteers will spend 30 days at least preparing food for the wolves daily. This is to ensure a thorough understanding of the food preparation requirements, as well as to gain understanding and information about the medications, supplements, and diets utilised. After following on morning rounds, you should report directly to the Wolf Kitchen and assist in all duties.

At 12.00noon, volunteers take their lunch break. Lunch breaks are one hour in length, and should be taken from 12-1pm unless for a specific reason. During your lunch break, you may go home, roam the grounds, utilise the volunteer kitchen, check e-mails in the main office if the computer is not being used for work purposes, and once you are trained you can interact with your animals.

After lunch, if there is still work to be done in the Wolf Kitchen, you should report there. If not, you will assist in whatever miscellaneous and/or maintenance projects are being done at the time. At 4.15pm projects are finished and all tools/supplies are put away. At 4.30pm, the workday is over and you are free to do whatever you like in your leisure time.

Please note: Itineraries and activities are subject to change.
