Ukraine Orphanage Volunteer

Orphans within the Ukraine have not received the same media attention as its neighbouring country, Romania. However, there are over 100,000 children that have been abandoned by their families as they can no longer afford to financially support them. Their stories are often tragic – many come from abusive and violent backgrounds. These children desperately need to know that someone cares for them and so volunteers will have a major impact on their young futures.

Without a loving home, in the past these orphans have turned to a life of crime or prostitution in desperation or even taken their own lives. With your help you can help build their self-esteem, give them important life skills, improve their employment opportunities through education and help them feel accepted within Ukrainian society.

Voluntary Work
There are many activities for volunteers to participate in. Your help is needed to teach English to the children, organise extra curricular classes (music, art, sports and dance), along with simply spending time and playing with the children. The orphanage runs initiatives to help build ecological awareness and the importance of protecting the environment.

Location

There are 3 orphanages that need volunteers. They are all located close to the capital city of Kiev in towns called Chigirin, Irpin and Cherkasy. You have the option to work in all 3 or just spend your time in one.

Accommodation and meals

Volunteers stay with a local host family - please enquire upon booking if you would like your own bedroom (this is usually possible) - with shared bathroom amenities. At least one member of the family will speak English. This is an ideal opportunity to become fully immersed in Ukrainian culture, learn about its customs and traditions and also become a member of the local community. Breakfast and dinner is provided everyday by the host family and lunch can be bought locally very cheaply.
