Voluntary Work

The structure of your classes will be largely up to you – the more varied and creative the better. You might, for example, devise a programme of games, songs, or drama to help your pupils enjoy their introduction to English.

Whilst the priority is to help the children to learn English, there are opportunities to combine this with teaching other skills. For example, you could assist in the teaching of a range of arts and crafts, impart your IT skills, or teach music at a specialist music school.

There are less structured environments too – you might help with play therapy, organise sports and other recreational activities, and even help children with homework after school.

Class sizes are small – usually just six to twelve pupils in each, and the children will be between four and fourteen years old.

Your work may include organising or helping with:

  • Conversational English classes
  • Play therapy/recreational and developmental activities
  • Computer studies for children and teenagers
  • Teaching music at a specialist music school
  • Teaching arts, crafts, and ceramics
  • Sports and games
  • Organising special events
  • Pupils’ homework
