Vervet monkeys are found in Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Mozambique and South Africa. Their natural habitat is in savannah, woodlands and along river courses.
They are omnivorous but feed mostly on plant material which included fruit, seeds, flowers, buds, roots, bark and gum. They also eat insects, lizards, birds, birds' eggs and occasionally, bird hatchings.
Vervet monkeys have a highly developed system of communication. They are believed to have the basic make up of a rough language having different sounds for different purposes and meaning. When they are threatening, they will push their head and shoulders forward and at the same time raise their eyebrows, exposing the white skin around the eyes.
The monkeys are unusual from other species of monkey as they tend to spend a lot of time on the ground, but they do sleep in trees. They live in troops of 15-60 members.
