Voluntary work in South America

Doing some voluntary work in South America is a great way to really get to know one of the world's most exciting and diverse continents. If you do some voluntary work in South America you will often visit places few other backpackers venture to and also get to know local people on a far more meaningful and intimate level. What's more, all of GYFGU's programmes give you the chance to learn Spanish (or Portuguese in Brazil) when you do some voluntary work in South America. Being able to speak to local people in their own language helps you get so much more out of your voluntary work in South America and is a really useful new skill to be able to return home with as well.

Most importantly of all, however, voluntary work in South America enables travellers to be responsible tourists on their gap year and ‘give something back' to some of the countries they visit. Voluntary work in South America gives you a huge sense of personal satisfaction at having been able to make a positive contribution on your travels. Although it's often a great deal of fun voluntary work in South America can also be quite challenging at times - so it's important you choose a project that's particularly well matched to your own personal interests and abilities. With this in mind it's worth spending a decent amount of time reading up on all of the various ‘Voluntary work in South America' options on the GYFGU's website. Alternatively, if you would prefer to discuss your ideas for voluntary work in South America with someone in person, you can always call one of GYFGU's team of expert travel advisers.

Broadly speaking there are two main types of voluntary work in South America to choose from - wildlife conservation and environmental conservation projects or volunteer with people projects dedicated to helping and caring for disadvantaged or impoverished communities. Once you have decided what type of voluntary work in South America you would like to get involved with you'll then need to decide where you would like to do the voluntary work. GYFGU's can help arrange voluntary work in South America in five exciting countries - Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador and Peru.

There are too many South American GYFGU's programmes to list in full here but, in order to help inspire you, here are just a few examples of the type of voluntary work in South America you could get involved with on your gap year…

Voluntary work in South America - Argentina

If you volunteer in Argentina you can choose from an extremely diverse range of ‘Voluntary work in South America' programmes - from working with street kids in Cordoba to helping market the work of local artists in Buenos Aires.

Voluntary work in South America - Bolivia

If you want to do some voluntary work in South America in a country that's more ‘off the beaten track' Bolivia is an excellent option. You can volunteer in Bolivia on a whole host of rewarding programmes - from caring for the visually impaired to helping out at an orphanage.

Voluntary work in South America - Brazil

If you volunteer in Brazil you could live and work in the fabulous city of Rio de Janeiro and help to provide care and education for children from Rio's impoverished favelas communities.

Voluntary work in South America - Ecuador

If you would like to do some voluntary work in South America helping to protect endangered wildlife or the environment Ecuador is a great choice - as it's the location of the wildlife lovers' paradise of the Galapagos Islands.

Voluntary work in South America - Peru

Peru is an extremely popular destination for travellers wanting to do some voluntary work in South America. If you volunteer in Peru you can help out on a wide range of projects - from a river turtle conservation project in the Amazon to a scheme dedicated to improving the working conditions of porters on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
