What is the location of the project like?
This project is located in Sungal close to Palampur, a hilly town famous for its frequent rainfall! A more fantastic feature about the area is the fact that the town has a number of lush green tea gardens before a backdrop of spectacular snow clad mountains, making it a wonderfully picturesque place to volunteer.

What is the climate going to be like?
Altitude affects the climate of Himachal Pradesh a lot, as obviously the higher you go, the colder it gets. So, the weather ranges from sub- humid tropical to glacial depending on how far above sea level the area is. Himachal also has three distinctive seasons; the hot season, the cold season and the rainy season. The area in which you will be taking part in this project sits at about 1250 metres above sea level. This puts it within the warm and temperate climate, but also means that the area has a lot of rain.

Will the bathrooms be what I’m used to?
Although there are places (including some accommodation) that have Western style toilets, you should be prepared for the ‘Asian toilet’! You are far more likely, however to come across the Indian shower – basically you have a bucket of water and use a jug to pour it over yourself to wash. You should be prepared for far more basic facilities than you are used to.

Will I need much spending money?
As all your accommodation and meals are included in the price of this project, you will only need extra money for any extra activities that you would like to do, or to buy any souvenirs, extra snacks, use the Internet and so on. For this kind of thing we suggest that you take an additional £40 maximum a week for spending money.

What’s the food like?
Your food on this project will consist of Indian cuisine. Your meals will consist of mainly vegetarian food, as the Indians themselves eat. You can expect to have vegetable curries, rice, chapattis (Indian flatbread) and lots of tea! Meat is not eaten often, and when it is only chicken and lamb are consumed because of Hindu and Muslim religious beliefs.

Does this project require me to have a visa?
Yes you will need a visa to travel to India. A tourist visa that lasts 6 months will cost you £30 and will cover you for the project.
