Volunteer with people

Working as a volunteer with people is a hugely rewarding way to be a responsible tourist and ‘give something back' on your career break. It is all too easy to forget how easy we have it in the western world compared to many of the local people we meet on our career break travel - so working as a volunteer with people is an ideal opportunity to help those less fortunate than yourself on your gap year.

Working as a volunteer with people is also very much a mutually beneficial two-way process. When you volunteer with people you gain a unique and privileged insight in to everyday life and local culture - something that's just not possible on a more conventional ‘sight-seeing' travel itinerary. On a more practical level, if you are taking a career break working as a volunteer with people also looks great on your CV - it shows you used your career break constructively and it's highly likely you will have picked up some useful new skills and experiences in the process too.

It's important to emphasise that working on volunteer projects with people is, more often than not, a lot of fun. The volunteering you do is undoubtedly hard-going at times but working as a volunteer with people is also a great way of getting to know both local people and fellow like-minded travellers. Many of the people you help when you volunteer with people tend to be truly inspirational with their positive outlook on life in the face of adversity - and a common phrase we hear from people who work as a volunteer with people is that it was ‘a real life-changing experience.'

If you would like to volunteer with people on your gap year or career break it's possible to do so in three main parts of the world - Africa, Asia and Latin America. We have a diverse range of rewarding ‘Volunteer with people' programmes in all three of these continents, so it's worth spending some time reading up on all of them on our website. Alternatively you can always discuss the various options for working as a volunteer with people with one of our expert travel advisers.

There are far too many programmes to summarise in full here but, in order to provide just a few examples of the type of rewarding volunteer projects you could get involved with when you volunteer with people on a gap year or career break, here are three typical examples.

Volunteer with people - Africa

You can volunteer with people in several African countries by helping out on projects dedicated to providing support to people who have been affected in by Africa's AIDS epidemic.

Volunteer with people - Asia

You can volunteer in Asia by choosing to teach English to schoolchildren - in India or Mongolia for example.

Volunteer with people - Latin America

You can volunteer in Latin America by providing much-needed support to impoverished street kids in several countries across the continent.
