West Coast South Africa

The west coast encompasses not only the seaboard but the rolling Swartland hills, the lush Olifants River Valley and the Cederberg Mountains.

The Olifants River Valley attractions include the Cederberg Wilderness Area, San rock paintings, the Clanwilliam and Bulshoek dams, the Bird Island at Lamberts Bay, the Olifants River Wine Route which is producing some fine white and red wines from this region. You can roam through the old missionary towns and stations and explore the region's historical heritage or roam through the fynbos. Savour some tea from the unique Rooibos Tea plant, or visit the succulent nursery and Knersvlakte at Vanrhynsdorp as well as its wealth of flora.

The Cederberg Wilderness Area lies some 200km north of Cape Town, stretching from the Middelberg Pass at Citrusdal to north of the Pakhuis Pass at Clanwilliam and encompassing some 71 000ha of rugged, mountainous terrain. The solitude and wild grandeur of the Cederberg Wilderness Area offers unsurpassed opportunities for recreation. Activities such as hiking and traditional rock climbing are encouraged as long as rock surfaces remain undamaged. Old woodcutters' paths crisscross the Wilderness Area and hikers may explore the area at will.

There is also Langebaan Lagoon, which is well known to most Capetonians, and it is undoubtedly the most charming warm water lagoon you'll find. If you're hunting the elusive perfect beach you should have Strandfontein on your hit list - it has a fabulous wide and wild beach with views from every cliff top holiday cottage. Close by are the vineyards of Lutzvill and the Spruitdif Wine Cellar.
