William Carter
Nepal English Teaching Assistant Project

English Teaching Assistant Nepal

How did you feel before you joined the programme?
I was determined but very apprehensive. I explained what I wanted to do in nepal and the very next day the programme was confirmed and I was given good advice as to what to expect.

What was the accommodation like?
I stayed in a variety of accommodation; guest houses were good, the home stay and orphanage were basic but adequate.

How was your experience in Nepal?
Every location was different, sights and sounds and meeting all the different people was wonderful.
What did you think of the programme?
I think this is a fantastic programme, the nepalese people are so warm and welcoming I never felt unsafe for one moment.

On reflection I think the project exceeded my expectations, I did not realize how close you can become to other people in such a short time.

The moment I will always remember is on the last day of my trip, I went back to the orphanage that I stayed at on the edge of Kathmandu. I wanted to be there before the children went to school at 9.30am but got held up in traffic and didnt arrive till later. I was dissapointed at not seeing them.

As I walked on to the orphanage I heard a small voice calling my name as I turned around a small boy from the home came running out of school and and grabbed me around my leg jumping up and down. Then all the children from the orphanage came running out of school calling my name and trying to grab my hands it was a very emotional and happy time for all of us, a moment that I will never forget.
How have you benefited from your experience?
It has made me realise that material things do not bring happiness, true happiness is being involved, helping others less fortunate than myself.

I am much more relaxed about myself and dont get aggravated when things do not go right.
What advice would you offer regarding this project?
Go with a positive attitude and to do your best under any circumstances.

Were you pleased your Trip?
I am pleased I went with Gap Year for Grown Ups, the entire trip went with out a hitch and I was frequently looked in on to make sure I was all right, I would surely reccomend Gap Year for Grown Ups to a friend with confidence.
