Zambia Medical Volunteers

Trip code: ZAMO
Medical volunteers in Zambia

Based in Livingstone, Zambia, this project will involve you working in a medical clinic and on a variety of exciting community development programmes. The idea of this is to provide much needed voluntary assistance to African communities, in exchange for a culturally enriching experience.

Orientation

Upon arrival in Livingstone, you will receive a one-day comprehensive and intensive orientation programme. This orientation is facilitated by your project volunteer coordinator and entails:

  • An introduction to the town of Livingstone and surrounding areas
  • An introduction to all our projects. Not only will you see where you will be working, you will also see where your fellow volunteers will be spending their days
  • An experienced nurse/project manager will give you a detailed briefing on common diseases in the area, working methods in the clinics, and safety precautions for working in the clinics and hospital. This is to ensure that you will start your work at the clinic or hospital in a well-prepared and safe way.
  • At the orientation, volunteers will also receive a welcome letter, which will contain further useful information

Accommodation and Meals

During your time at the project, you will be staying at our volunteer house, which is simple, clean, comfortable and suitable for your needs. The house has 11 bedrooms all with en suites. 10 of the 11 bedrooms sleep 4 comfortably and the last sleeps 2. There is a comfortable dining and lounge areas to relax in with your friends after a hard day of work. The toilets and showers are clean and western style.

The houses are staffed with a fantastic cook and laundry/cleaning ladies. All meals, laundry and transportation to and from schools/clinics and tourist activities will be provided and organised by your volunteer co-ordinator.

You will be provided with three meals a day throughout your stay in Zambia. Breakfast is on a help-yourself basis and usually consists of cereals/porridge, toast, tea and coffee. Lunch and dinner are full meals, and will be cooked for you by one of our chefs at your volunteer house. Sometimes on weekends you will need to cook your own meals with ingredients that will be provided, as our staff will need to be given time off. Weekends are usually good times for tourist activities and exploring the surrounding area, so that is the time that a lot of volunteers are out and about anyway.

Free Time

Victoria Falls is right on your doorstep and is known as the adrenalin capital of the world!

During your weekends and spare time, you will have the opportunity to experience the following activities, at your own personal cost:

  • The world’s most exciting white water rafting on the Zambezi River
  • Bungee jumping and gorge swings over the Batoka Gorge below the Falls
  • Sunset cruises or canoeing safaris on the Zambezi River with experienced guides
  • Elephant or horse back safaris (half day or full day excursions)
  • Helicopter and Microlight flights over the Falls and Zambezi National Park
  • A fully organised weekend tour to Victoria Falls, including a variety of activities at just US$250 per person. This will include lion walks, visas, accommodation, food and drinks.
