Volunteering in Goa Goa, India: Community Volunteer Programme

In total, how long were you away from home?
I was in India for seven weeks and at the programme for four weeks.

What was your motivation to take a gap break?
It is something that I have wanted to do for a very long time.  I was interested in learning and living in a different culture, and being involved in helping disadvantaged communities in another part of the world.  I also just wanted a new exciting life experience.

How did you feel before you joined the programme?
Not sure what you mean by this, but I was very excited about the programme, until the Mumbai attacks occurred 2 weeks before I was due to leave.  This was off putting, but I still went and was so glad that I did.

What was the most memorable moment of your trip? Any anecdotes?
Everything!  The whole experience was just wonderful.  I worked in the Fisherman’s School and going to work every morning and being fully accepted within their tight community was a joy and I felt extremely privileged to be able to do that.  The children were just beautiful and even though they are extremely poor they are really happy children - I will always remember that.

How have you benefited from your experience?
When I was over there I just enjoyed every moment, and didn’t realise how much the experience affected me at that time.  Since being home I have found myself reflecting a lot on the experience – the country, people and culture.  I think I have benefited greatly from the experience on so many levels, and it has made me realise that I would like to go back to India and do it all again – but for a lot longer next time!

What advice could you offer to someone considering this programme?
Just go for it!  As I had never travelled outside Europe before this trip I was anxious that I would be able to cope with the culture shock.  However, I loved it from the moment of arrival and I can honestly say it is the best thing I’ve ever done in my life – I only wish I had done it 10 years ago!  I would recommend the experience to anyone.
